CONFIRMATION
Our confirmation program is open to students in 8th grade and above who are ready to explore what it means to personally confirm the promises made at their baptism. We use Confirm not Conform: Presbyterian Edition—a dynamic curriculum originally developed in the Episcopal tradition and thoughtfully adapted for Presbyterian youth. Through engaging lessons, students dive into topics such as Scripture, sacraments, creeds, heresy, prayer, world religions, and serving others, while reflecting on what they believe and why. The program includes 17 Sunday sessions during the school year, beginning with a weekend retreat in late summer and culminating in an all-church celebration pm a Saturday in the weeks leading up to Confirmation in May.
Confirm not Conform emphasizes discovering one’s own voice rather than simply conforming to outside expectations. It respects the thoughtful, meaningful work that youth and adults do as they grow in faith—trusting that when individuals take the time to reflect and articulate their beliefs, they will be well equipped to take the next step on their faith journey.
2025-26 Parent Mentor Guidebook
The early teen and young adult years are very much about figuring oneself out, shaping one's own identity. As people who go to church, our identity as Christians is part of what we're figuring out.
Confirmation class is the way in which we learn which values are ours, which values belong to those in our constellation of family and friends, and which of those values we want to claim as our own. This eight-month process is designed for 8th graders and above to:
* Gain a basic knowledge and understanding of Christianity.
* Learn about the core beliefs and practices of The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and other faith traditions.
* Explore the vows that confirmands will take if they choose to be confirmed so they understand the commitment they will be making.
Our Confirmation program helps you choose to confirm, not conform - to help you claim that faith for yourself and make those vows your own. The program is centered around study, worship, service, and fellowship so you can learn about faith, asking questions, naming challenges, experiencing giving of yourself, and exploring more about the God who loves you exactly as you are.
WELCOMING CHILDREN AT FIRST PRES
CHILDCARE: NURSERY (birth–2) & PRE-K (ages 3–4)
We love having your little ones in worship! It’s a joy to see them light up as they greet friends and hear voices lifted in song. Still, we know there are times they may prefer a space designed just for them—a place to relax, play, and feel at home—while you focus on your own experience of worship. Free childcare is available in our Nursery and Pre-K room, and our ushers will be happy to guide you there.
WORSHIP KITS
For children participating in worship, we provide activity kits designed to help them engage with that day’s service. You can find them near the entrances to the Sanctuary or Chapel as you arrive. These kits are especially helpful during the summer when Sunday School is on break, or on any Sunday when kids choose to remain in worship.
HOW DO WE WELCOME CHILDREN AT FIRST PRES?
Children are our fellow congregants. As a faith community, we make a commitment at baptism to help nurture and guide one another and encourage one another to know and follow Christ and be faithful members of Christ’s church.
Take a moment during the Passing of the Peace, Social Hour, service or Christian Education events to greet families and get to know the names of the family members.
Sign up to help with Sunday School.
Help preschoolers and elementary-aged kids learn to navigate the worship service; they’re newer to this than you are! Help them read the bulletin, locate hymns, and read along with prayers and liturgy.
It’s not always easy to recognize some needs. Some people, children and adults alike, may hum, make unfamiliar vocalizations or noises, or demonstrate other behaviors that allow them to express themselves during the service. Everyone belongs in worship. Please welcome questions children have about differences of all kinds so they might learn how to delight in the diversity of God’s beautiful creation along with God.
Remember how it was when you were a child and remember the adults who helped you grow your faith. Help create an environment in which our kids can learn, feel, and share Christ’s love as we all do!

WIGGLY WORSHIP SPACE
For kids entering 3rd grade and younger, our Wiggly Worship tables offer hands-on materials like whiteboards, markers, erasers, and soft felt building supplies to help keep little hands busy while hearts and minds engage with worship. These tables are thoughtfully placed to give children a clear view of what’s happening up front, and are located near pews where families can sit together, modeling and encouraging age-appropriate participation in the worship service.
