Large Choral WorksOn Sunday, May 13, the Chancel Choir sang the “Requiem” by British composer John Rutter. This is one of the most beloved shorter major works in the contemporary repertoire. John Rutter, born in London in 1945, was educated at Cambridge and is known for his beautiful, lyrical compositions for choir and orchestra. This work is the first one he wrote which was not specifically commissioned. It was written and first performed in 1985. It is an affirmation of Christian doctrine pertaining to death and eternal life, centered around light and consolation. It is filled with beauty and hope and peace. It is scored for choir, 23-piece orchestra, solo soprano, solo oboe, and solo cello. The texts include some of the traditional Latin Requiem mass, along with psalms in English. The melodies are achingly beautiful, a trademark of Rutter’s compositions. Watch the Chancel Choir perform the Requiem by John Rutter
